What is hemp oil good for?

As people continue to search for alternative remedies to promote better health and wellness, products like CBD and hemp oil are becoming popular choices for many consumers. But what is hemp oil good for? The answer to this question depends on what kind of hemp oil you are using, and what part of the plant it was extracted from.

Hemp Seed Oil vs. CBD Hemp Oil

There’s often some confusion surrounding hemp derived products, and oils in particular. When looking for hemp oils, it’s important to understand the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD hemp oil products.

They each have their own range of benefits, and it depends what kind of effects you are looking for when deciding which one is right for you.

CBD Oil

The trendy new supplement that’s flooding the market, CBD (or cannabidiol), is a compound found in cannabis plants that’s believed to have various therapeutic properties. CBD oil is typically extracted from the stalks, stems, and flowers of industrial hemp plants, which results in a hemp oil that contains many beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes. These hemp extracts also have little to no THC, so you won’t experience any psychoactive effects when using these products.

The CBD and other phytocannabinoids in these full spectrum hemp oils work within the body to interact indirectly with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS plays an important role in the human body, since it aids in the regulation and modulation of bodily functions. The immune system, digestive system, and central and peripheral nervous systems are just a few of the processes that the endocannabinoid system has an influence on, and CBD oil may help promote internal balance by interacting with cannabinoid receptors throughout the body.

What are the benefits of CBD hemp oil?

While research and clinical studies on the therapeutic potential of CBD are still in their infancy, anecdotal evidence tells us that many people use hemp oil for an array of different conditions, including:

  • Chronic pain—CBD is known to have anti-inflammatory properties that work to manage pain by modulating the immune response throughout the body.
  • Anxiety and depression—Studies have shown that CBD might reduce feelings of anxiety and sadness by regulating hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, and promoting serotonin and dopamine release.
  • Seizures—The only CBD approved medication, Epidiolex, is prescribed to patients with a form of epilepsy known as Dravet’s syndrome. Research showed significant improvement in people with this rare and difficult to treat condition.
  • Skin conditions—Topical CBD creams have helped many people alleviate irritated skin from eczema, psoriasis, acne, and more.
  • Sleep issues—If you have trouble falling asleep at night, CBD may help promote a restful night by mitigating the release of stress hormones that keep you awake at night.

Learn more about the benefits of CBD

CBD oil is a popular product known for its potential health benefits, but hemp seed oil is another “hemp oil” that consumers are curious to learn more about.

Hemp Seed Oil

When making this type of hemp oil, seeds of the hemp plant are cold pressed to create a dark oil that’s rich in vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial nutrients. However, these seeds are not rich in cannabinoids and do not produce the same effects as CBD oil. Instead, this version of hemp oil has its own unique wellness advantages to offer, including:

  • Heart health improvements—Hemp seed oil is rich in essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 that work to reduce blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, and decrease your chance of heart disease or stroke.
  • Skin benefits—The rich nutrients and linoleic acid in hemp seed oil can alleviate dry, itchy, or irritated skin by promoting skin cell repair and regeneration.
  • Boost immunity—The high levels of essential fatty acids in hemp seed oil may also help regulate the cell communication and gene expression in the immune system.

Hemp seed oil can also be used as an effective carrier oil for CBD, meaning some hemp oils contain both CBD oil and hemp seed oil.

What are the side effects of hemp oil?

Currently, there have been no reported side effects for people who take hemp seed oil. However, some people may experience rare side effects when taking CBD oil, such as:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Changes in appetite
  • Diarrhea

While these side effects are seldom experienced, your best chance at avoiding a potential negative reaction is to make sure you are taking the right amount of CBD. This may require some trial and error to find your perfect dose, but start low and slowly work your way up until you find an appropriate dose for your needs.

The Right Hemp Oil for You

For anyone looking to advance their health naturally, hemp oils are a valid option. If you are looking for a product that possibly reduces inflammation or alleviates anxiety, CBD oil might be the right choice for you. But if you want an FDA approved dietary supplement that might boost your heart health, you may feel more comfortable taking hemp seed oil. In either case, the choice is yours to make.
