Potential Benefits of Matcha Green Tea. An expert opinion.

By Jaclyn Jacobsen, MS

Matcha is a powder made from the Camellia sinensis plant originating in China during the 12th century and is known for its medicinal properties. The powder is made from whole green tea leaves, ground into a fine powder. The difference between matcha and traditional green tea is the amount of the leaf that is used. For matcha, the stems and veins of the leaf are removed and what remains is what constitutes the powder.

Matcha is grown in shade until harvested to increase chlorophyll production which gives the powder its dark green hue. Also, it contains a class of antioxidants called catechins and is high in a catechin called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which is believed to decrease inflammation and prevent free radical damage.

Matcha also contains higher levels of caffeine which may support energy, improve focus and increase fat loss efforts.

What You Need to Know

When purchasing matcha, here are the top three things to keep in mind:

1. Look at the origin of the matcha and make sure it is sourced from Japan and is stone ground as this is the traditional method of making the powder.

2. Quality matcha should be a vibrant green. Low quality matcha will have a yellow or brown hue which may allude to poor harvesting or an older product.

3. Don’t let the “grade” fool you. Terminology such as ceremonial or food grade are terms used by the company’s selling the product as a marketing strategy. Those terms do not indicate the quality of the actual matcha.

Our Remedy Review:

Why would you take matcha?

Matcha has many benefits which may include decreased inflammation, weight loss, improved brain function and cardiovascular health. It’s also a great alternative to coffee or addition to baking and smoothies.

Is it worth your money?

High quality matcha will be at a high price point. If you choose a matcha at a lower price, you may also be choosing a lower quality product. With the vast amount of research supporting the benefits of matcha, it is definitely worth the money.

Who is best for?

Matcha is best for adult men and women looking to support energy, mood, focus, lose weight or lower cholesterol. It is simple to prepare, which makes it a great option for anyone on-the-go as well.

If you are taking any medication, consult with your doctor before adding matcha into your daily routine.
