How To Give Your Cat CBD

If your cat has a condition or symptoms that are hard to manage, you might be frustrated with the available or recommended treatment options. Maybe you’ve tried all of the traditional routes, but nothing seems to help your furry friend as much as you’d like it to. So what else is there to try?

More recently, pet owners are turning to CBD oil as a way to manage a variety of conditions among cats. A 2016 survey published by the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association reported that a sample size of 600 cat owners who administered CBD products to their cats used it for a wide range of symptoms, including pain, nausea, seizures, inflammation, sleep trouble, and bowel issues.

CBD has become a popular supplement among dog and cat owners for a variety of health benefits, and many CBD brands have responded to this increase in demand with pet-centered products. But before you dive in head-first with CBD for your cat, you may need a little background info—so here’s some helpful suggestions on how to choose a CBD product and how to administer it to your feline friend.

First, what is CBD?

CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, is a cannabis compound that has gained traction recently as an ingredient in wellness supplements. In both humans and pets, there is something called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which CBD interacts with once it enters the body. CBD can help the ECS to exercise its primary function of regulating other systems in the body.

Since the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp in December, hemp-derived products have become popular for a variety of health benefits. But many pet owners struggle to understand the legality of CBD and what’s safe to give their pet. Essentially, CBD products are widely legal as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC, or the psychoactive component in cannabis plants. Translation: CBD products won’t make your cat high, and any negative side effects are a rare occurrence.

How CBD may help your cat

Many pet owners have found CBD to be a beneficial supplement when introduced into their pet care routine. CBD products are easy to administer and safe for cats to use. They can improve coat and skin health as well as ease symptoms associated with conditions that are common in cats, like inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, arthritis, and asthma.

CBD’s interaction with the endocannabinoid system give the compound a wide range of health capabilities. In addition to helping manage symptoms for specific conditions, CBD can promote general wellness and overall quality of life. Many cat owners use CBD for pain relief, inflammation, sleep assistance, and other issues that might creep up, or as a potential holistic alternative to some prescription medications.

Application method and dosage of CBD for cats

Administering CBD to your cat has been made easy with the pet and cat-specific CBD products that are now taking off. There are many CBD brands that solely produce pet products, and many others that have pet lines. Products come in many different forms, including CBD oil, treats, oral sprays, and soft chews. Oil can be administered orally or mixed into your cat’s food, while treats and chews can simply be gobbled up.

If you’re shopping for your cat, look for products that are targeted at pets, or cats specifically. This will provide you with a product that your pet is more likely to willing consume, while also ensuring that he or she gets the proper dosage. CBD pet products are available with a variety of appealing flavors, including salmon, cheese, chicken, and others.

CBD products are generally considered safe by The World Health Organization, and side effects are rare with the correct dosage. However, more research is needed to determine the long-term effects of this hemp extract. Additionally, it’s important to ease CBD into your cat’s diet. Start with the lowest recommended dosage and work your way up. Be attentive to how it affects your cat, and slowly increase the dosage until it seems to be producing the proper results.
