In 1978, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield turned an old gas station into an ice cream shop in Burlington, Vermont. Forty years later, their pints are making history. In a statement released on May 30th, 2019, Ben & Jerry’s committed to the sustainable future of hemp by announcing their excitement for a new, CBD-infused flavor.
Ben & Jerry’s is not only a renowned American ice cream company; they’re an eco-conscious one too. The subsidiary of Unilever is a certified B-corp, and they often partner with pop culture icons to raise funds for charities across the country. Many of their flavors come in vegan and dairy-free options, and Ben & Jerry’s use organic, fair trade, and local ingredients whenever possible. These are only a few of the ways that Ben & Jerry’s proves how an environmentally and socially conscious company can be just as profitable as its competitors.
The ice cream icon is looking to the next horizon in sustainability by providing CBD infused ice cream for several unannounced flavors. Their statement reads:
“You probably already know that we’re fans of all things groovy — think: Half Baked and Dave Matthews Band Magic Brownies. So it’s no surprise that we can’t wait to get into the latest food trend: cannabidiol, or CBD. We are open to bringing CBD-infused ice cream to your freezer as soon as it’s legalized at the federal level.”
Currently, the FDA has not approved the use of CBD for food and beverage industries. While many local coffee shops, ice cream shops, and restaurants are using CBD across America, Ben & Jerry’s cannot distribute to all of their retailers until it is approved nationwide. In the statement, they encourage customers to advocate for federal legalization by providing a link to an open discussion on Regulations.gov about CBD. Until then, the release date for Ben & Jerry’s CBD-infused ice cream is undetermined.
Ben & Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy shares his excitement for the fan support of CBD-infused ice cream: “We’re doing this for our fans. We’ve listened and brought them everything from Non-Dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices. We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a Ben & Jerry’s way.”
The hemp industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the American economy, and one whose players certainly value sustainability. The growth of the CBD industry will further hemp research at large, including alternative uses for hemp such as paper, hemp plastics, and much more. Plus, CBD consumers show through their spending habits that they are concerned with the environmental sustainability of their CBD sources.
