Meet the founders of Sagely Naturals

The first time that Kerrigan Behren tried CBD, it quite literally changed her life. Having dealt with chronic back pain for years, Kerrigan took on a friend’s suggestion to consume some CBD honey. An hour after ingesting it, her back pain was greatly relieved, and she felt better than she had in a long time.

“In that moment,” Kerrigan said, “I really felt like CBD had the potential to change a lot of peoples’ lives for the better.”

Today Kerrigan is co-founder of Sagely Naturals, a Santa Monica-based CBD company with non-psychoactive pain and stress-relieving products all sourced from organic and non-GMO hemp, including creams, capsules, roll-ons, and sprays. She and her business partner, Kaley, are intent on not only creating consumer-friendly, women-centered CBD products, but dispelling many common myths about cannabidiol (CBD), one of the naturally occurring compounds found in both the hemp and cannabis plant.

When Kerrigan and Kaley first visited a medical cannabis dispensary in California, they were shocked to discover just how many items contained high amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis. Hemp, in comparison, contains less than 0.3% of THC.

“I personally don’t like smoking and edibles can be really unpredictable so I was left to wonder: Where are the products that I already use in my everyday life?” Kerrigan explains. “Coming out with products that you would already have in your medicine cabinet became a priority. [The] majority of Americans aren’t comfortable getting high and the beauty of CBD is that it has all of these benefits with no psychoactive effects.”

Popular items in the CBD and THC market include “flower” buds (the buds that come directly from the cannabis plant that are then smoked) “concentrates” that come in the form of high-potency vaporizers or shatter, also smoked, as well as gummies, juices, teas, coffees, and various other CBD and THC-infused drinks edibles alike.

But instead of the typical “stoner” products they’d found at many dispensaries, Kerrigan and Kaley wanted to develop a far more inviting brand that felt “therapeutic, familiar, and safe,” more like “one that you would see at Target or Whole Foods, not in a typical dispensary.” This had been, they’d realized, a missed opportunity on the part of most CBD retailers.

“As women, we felt like all the products [we’d seen] were made for men,” Kerrigan tells us. “What if we want something that we can proudly display on our bathroom counters or carry around with us in my purses?” The options, the partners found at the time they searching, were extremely limited and mostly geared towards men.

With a sleek, user-friendly website that offers curated collections for different areas of stress and soreness, the Sagely Naturals brand is certainly appealing to women and general wellness consumers alike. The site even features a helpful “CBD 101” section informing consumers of how CBD works on the body’s natural Endocanniboind System, which is responsible from regulating everything from mood, the nervous system, and the immune system, with receptors found throughout the body in the brain, organs, lungs, connective tissues, and glands.

As opposed to what the company calls a “Band-Aid approach,” Sagely Naturals promises that their products will address the underlying mental and physical health issues of each consumer. There’s even a brief history of CBD and the ways hemp has been used for medicinal purposes as far back as 2700 B.C.

Each Sagely Naturals product is carefully formulated, made with hemp specially grown and extracted at GMP certified facilities that use cutting edge technology, are staffed by credible and capable extraction teams, and strongly adhere to strict industry standards of operation and quality control. Every lab batch is triple tested, so customers always know what they’re getting. In addition, all Sagely Natural products contain essential oils and ingredients free from parabens, synthetic fragrances, artificial colors or dyes, or sulfates.

“Our products resonate with millennials all the way up to boomers,” Kerrigan tell us. “Our mission is to get people back to doing what they love most. “

Many people think that CBD comes only from cannabis, but as Kerrigan explains, it is in fact the hemp plant where CBD is at its most abundant. While there are many different CBD oils, creams, lotions, capsules and powders on the market, not all of them were created to the same industry standards. Some may include low-quality hemp or ingredients that aren’t organic nor are they sustainable. And since Sagely Natural’s products are all derived from hemp, not marijuana, you do not need to visit a cannabis dispensary in order to purchase them. In fact, Sagely Naturals products are legal to purchase and ship in all 50 states.

This industrial development was greatly aided by Section 7606 of the Agricultural Act of 2014 (“Farm Bill”), under which agricultural hemp can now be legally grown and sold at the federal level. A number of universities around the country are conducting special hemp pilot research programs–including Purdue University, Virginia Tech, and Penn State–in which researchers collaborate with local farmers, agricultural specialists, and academics across the fields of hemp cultivation and extraction, hopeful to find new ways to grow and utilize the crop to its fullest potential.

As for what makes Sagely Naturals stand out from most other CBD brands on the market, Kerrigan emphasizes the company’s approachable, familiar branding, their exciting new approach to relief (as the way CBD works is quite different than OTC products), and their all natural-ingredients, including essential oils and herbs such as turmeric and ashwagandha.

Notable products include a Relief & Recovery Headache Roll-On and Tranquility Capsules with a formula created by PhD chemists to help promote a balanced mood.
