The collection of companies finding new ways to incorporate CBD into their products is continuing to rise in the food and beverage industry. Jones Soda Co., a popular beverage company that’s been around since 1995, is the latest addition to the list with—you guessed it—CBD infused sodas.
Last week, Heavenly Rx, a hemp portfolio company for SOL Global Investments bought 15 million shares in Jones Soda Co., totalling an investment worth $9 million.
Jones Soda Co. is based out of Seattle, and they are popular for making a variety of soda flavors from the classic cola to a unique crushed melon—all made with pure cane sugar. With an ongoing decline in demand for sodas and the company’s personal accumulated losses, the investment was a welcomed one that inspired Jones to create a new line of beverages featuring CBD.
CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, is already offered in some bubbly sparkling waters and hemp sodas. But Heavenly Rx CEO, Paul Norman, believes the modern twist of adding CBD infusions to a classic product like Jones’ sodas is just what the company needs to drive growth.
CBD interacts with your endocannabinoid system, which is an important control system in the function of brain, endocrine, and immune tissues, and is often referred to as a bridge between the body and the mind.
There are a variety of beneficial properties of CBD consumption including treatments for anxiety, reducing inflammation and pain, and even having anti-seizure properties. With that being said, this doesn’t necessarily mean drinking a CBD infused soda will be a cure-all. In fact, there’s a large list of healthier ways to consume CBD with more advantageous results. So what’s the point of consuming a soda with CBD? Essentially, it’s a trendy product that promotes wellness in a unique and fun way, which attracts a niche audience of consumers in the food and beverage industry.
Some people may struggle to find the right method for adding CBD to their beverages at home because it’s an oil-based product that traditionally isn’t soluble in water. So you might be asking yourself how it’s possible to infuse soda (a water-based component) with CBD oil, but CBD beverage companies have already figured that out.
Recess, an NYC based company that creates and sells CBD infused sparkling water, uses a technique known as “nanoemulsion.” Nanoemulsion consists of binding together water and oil on a microscopic level, dispersing the oil droplets throughout the liquid in such a way that makes it appear to be completely dissolved.
Another thing to keep in mind when drinking a CBD infused beverage is the bioavailability component. Because the beverage is ingested and has to go through the digestive tract, a large part of the CBD consumed is metabolized, possibly lessening any potential effects.
The answer to this question depends heavily on the US Food and Drug Administration, and regulations of CBD in food, drink, and personal care products. Once Jones Soda Co. receives the go-ahead, CEO Jennifer Cue says they will be ready to unveil their line of CBD-infused soda to the masses.
