8 Celebrities Who Champion CBD

By Melena Gurganus

As CBD becomes more popular, cultural figures are speaking out about how this cannabis extract has helped them with various health-related issues. This kind of awareness highlights the importance of proper knowledge and information when it comes to CBD, and may help break some of the stigmas attached to cannabis as a natural remedy.

Montel Williams

In 1999, well-known media personality and former Naval officer, Montel Williams, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). To help with the symptoms of this disease, Williams sought out cannabis extracts to relieve his pain when prescription drugs weren’t enough. Since then, he has become an advocate for the medicinal properties of cannabis, and founded his own line of cannabis and hemp derived CBD products called Lentitiv.

Busy Philipps

While she is best known for her roles in television shows like Dawson’s Creek and Cougar Town, Busy Phillips is now making waves in the CBD community as well. She has opened up about her personal struggles with anxiety and other mental health issues, and told Health Magazine that she is a “strong proponent” of CBD gummies to help calm her anxiety and panic attacks.

Olivia Wilde

A premier Hollywood stylist, Karla Welch, uses CBD lotion to help her client’s aching feet while wearing heels on the red carpet, including A-list actress Olivia Wilde. Wilde also told the New York Times, “Recently I did a play on Broadway for six months, and my body was wrecked. My neck was really tight. The CBD has relaxing benefits, and the idea is to avoid using too many painkillers.”

Whoopi Goldberg

As an incredibly successful entertainer with Emmy, Tony, Grammy, and Academy Awards under her belt, Whoopi Goldberg has also launched a medicinal cannabis company that is gaining popularity. Goldberg partnered up with Maya Elisabeth to create Whoopi & Maya, selling both CBD and THC products designed to relieve painful menstrual cramps, among other things. She told Vanity Fair, “For me, I feel like if you don’t want to get high high, this is a product specifically just to get rid of discomfort.”

Alessandra Ambrosio

For this Victoria’s Secret model, it’s essential to get a good night’s rest before walking in the lingerie lines’ annual fashion show. Ambrosio says it isn’t always easy to fall asleep the night before the big day, “…because the mind gets anxious, so I try CBD oil and I think it helps,” she said in an interview with Well+Good.

Ricky Williams

After retiring from the NFL, former running back and Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams developed a line of herbal-based wellness products and founded Real Wellness (RW for short). Williams started learning about the benefits of holistic medicine 15 years ago, and says that “cannabis has played an important part in my healing journey, and I feel a responsibility to share what I have learned in the process.”

Nate Diaz

In 2016, UFC fighter Nate Diaz caused some commotion over his CBD vape pen, which he used during a post-fight press conference. When questioned about the pen, he said it contained CBD and stated, “It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It’ll make your life a better place.” After this, Diaz was given an official warning by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, since cannabis extracts at that time were still on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list. However, CBD was effectively removed from this list on January 1, 2018.

Derrick Morgan

As an active NFL linebacker for the Tennessee Titans, Derrick Morgan has publicly advocated for CBD and the importance of cannabis research. In an article from SB Nation, Morgan was quoted saying, “At the foundation of what I’m talking about is player health and safety. If you want to get distracted by the stigma or what not, well that’s on you.”
