CBD Lotion vs. Other Topical CBD Products
As you shop for topical CBD products, you’ll get to choose between lotions and creams, balms and salves, and oils.
- Lotions and creams tend to have a smoother, lighter texture and contain additional ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera, and coconut oil to revitalize the skin.
- Balms and salves, on the other hand are thicker because they use less water and usually contain beeswax. When combined with peppermint oil, they can deliver a pleasant cooling sensation.
- Topical CBD oil typically contains coconut, olive, or hemp seed oil as a base and are ideal for massage.
In general, CBD lotions are best-suited for widespread application on sensitive areas like the face, hands, and feet.
However, as promising as cutting-edge CBD research is, it’s far from a cure-all. There are still very few regulations surrounding topical CBD ointments, and most of the research is based on animal studies. With that said, CBD is a generally safe compound and can be a healthy part of a well-rounded skin treatment plan.
How CBD Lotion Works
CBD lotions work by mimicking the effects of endogenous cannabinoids, also known as “endocannabinoids,” which the body naturally synthesizes.
These compounds communicate through a network of receptors that are part of the endocannabinoid system to help regulate the immune system, nervous system, and all other body systems.
When you apply CBD as a lotion, it activates these receptors and helps the skin heal.
Benefits of CBD Lotion for Skin
CBD can enter the bloodstream through the skin to provide pain relief and reduce skin irritation at the site of application.
Astonishingly, CBD may even inhibit the growth of acne. In a 2014 study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers had this to say about their findings:
“Collectively, our findings suggest that, due to the combined lipostatic, antiproliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects, CBD has potential as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne vulgaris.”
A separate 2019 study found that CBD-enriched ointment may be a viable treatment for atopic dermatitis. After applying CBD to the affected areas twice a day for three months, patients experienced less inflammation and reduced scar tissue.
But the therapeutic effects of CBD lotion may go well beyond skin care…
In a 2015 rodent study, researchers found that daily treatment with topical 1% CBD cream exerted neuroprotective effects in subjects with the autoimmune condition multiple sclerosis (MS). Post-mortem biopsies revealed that CBD not only slowed the progression of trademark symptoms but also significantly reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Why Use a CBD Cream
CBD-infused body lotion is one of several topical CBD products that can rejuvenate the skin by reducing inflammation and hydrating the cells. Along with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), it’s the second-most prominent phytocannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp plants, both of which belong to the Cannabis sativas plant species. However, there’s one major difference between CBD and THC, and that’s that CBD doesn’t get you high.
It can be ingested as CBD drops or smoked as a flower or vaporizer, but topical ointments like balms, salves, creams, and lotions are easier for the body to process. For example, a 2016 rodent study determined that topical administration resulted in more constant blood plasma levels and reduced inflammation and pain with zero side effects.
CBD lotions typically contain additional ingredients like sodium hydroxide, aloe vera leaf juice, and caprylic triglyceride (coconut oil + glycerine) to further hydrate and restore the skin barrier. Other formulas contain essential oils like lavender to reduce stress and compounds like glyceryl stearate and peg-100 stearate to improve texture.
So do your research and think about adding a CBD lotion to your skin care routine.
